SEND Frequently Asked Questions
What kinds of Special Educational Needs or Disability (SEND) does your school provide for?
The four categories of SEND are:
• Communication and Interaction
• Cognition and Learning
• Social, Emotional and Mental Health
• Physical and Sensory
What do I do if I think my child has a SEN need?
In the first instance, make an appointment to speak to your child’s class teacher. Share your concerns with them and see what they think. It may be that you have noticed something at home that we do not observe as much at school. Your views and opinions are always welcome and we will always take your concerns seriously.
Who is responsible for supporting my child’s difficulties with learning / SEND?
Your child’s class teacher is responsible for supporting your child with their SEND needs. This includes:
• Providing Quality First Teaching
• Being the first point of contact for parents
• Monitoring the progress and attainment of your child.
• Planning, reviewing and additional support that your child accesses.
• Involving the SENDCO if any concerns are identified.
• Writing pupil progress targets and reviewing these with parents three times per year (including parents’ evenings).
• Ensuring that the school’s SEND policy is followed in their classroom and for pupils they teach.
How will my child be supported?
Every child will access different support in school, depending on their needs and the barriers they face to learning. Once your child has been identified as having an additional need, you will have a meeting with your child’s class teacher to discuss what support will be put in place to help and support them. Sometimes, Miss Gillmore will attend these meetings too, either upon parental request or when a child’s provision is particularly complex or may include external professionals.
For more information about what SEND support looks like at Eastry, have a look at our whole school provision maps in our How we Identify SEND and plan support at Eastry section.
How long will my child have SEN support for?
At Eastry, we have our SEND register and a Monitoring register. This is a place where we record key information about children who have SEND needs and access targeted support. Children can move off and on these registers at any time. We will always have a meeting with you to discuss this before any final decision is made. Every year, parents will receive a letter from Miss Gillmore to inform them that their child is on the SEND register or the Monitoring register.
Parents of children on our SEND register will meet with their child’s class teacher three times per year to discuss their progress and review their targets.
Children on our monitoring register have a personalised pen portrait which is created by their class teacher and reviewed annually. Every June /July, parents with children on our monitoring register are invited into school to meet with their child’s current teacher, their new teacher and the SENDCO to review their progress, support and their child’s pen portrait.
Will my child’s teacher be trained in how to support my child?
Over the course of the year, our teachers and TAs engage in a variety of training in SEND. Some of this training may be delivered by Miss Gillmore and has previously included training in Autism awareness, using the mainstream core standards, planning for need types in your classroom, speech and language and attachment and trauma. Sometimes, we will need to access more specialist teaching to support our pupils. On these occasions we can book in support from the Specialist Teaching Service, Speech and Language, our link Educational Psychologist and link SEN Inclusion Advisor from the Local Authority.
Our TAs access weekly training on bespoke interventions, tracking children’s progress and delivering and preparing interventions.
Our staff have a host of experience and expertise but if you are concerned whether we can meet your child’s needs, please speak to Miss Gillmore directly.
